Difference between explanatory and predictive modelling

• Explanatory modelling: Tries to minimize the squared bias, as we are interested in obtaining the most accurate representation of the investigated phenomenon and the related theory.

• Predictive modelling: Tries to minimize the sum of the squared bias and the estimation variance, because we are interested in minimization of the prediction error.
