00:09:11 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): start
00:12:29 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): RStudio: Global Options > Code > Display > Show margin is helpful for marking the 80-character line width.
00:13:31 Floris Vanderhaeghe: The {styler} package and its RStudio addins are also very helpful!
00:13:44 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): Reacted to "The {styler} package..." with ☝️
00:15:55 Gus Lipkin: There are a few different packages/functions that will compile a list of libraries used.
I think pacman, attachment, and maybe something coming from devtools or roxygen2
00:16:24 Floris Vanderhaeghe: https://rstats.wtf/
00:24:12 Priyanka: I found this as an amazing one for naming :
https://indrajeetpatil.github.io/second-hardest-cs-thing/#/dealing-with-the-second-hardest-thing-in-computer-science
00:25:21 Gus Lipkin: Something that I find helps a lot with keeping names straight is breaking everything into functions where the function name says what it does and assigns an object with a similar name `stuff <- get_stuff()` then maybe `boxed <- box_up(stuff)`
00:25:33 Priyanka: Reacted to "Something that I fin..." with 👍
00:29:45 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): > data.frame(x <- "a")
x.....a.
1 a
00:30:03 Floris Vanderhaeghe: Also the tidyverse style guide disrecommends '=' for assignment. https://style.tidyverse.org/syntax.html?#assignment-1
00:30:18 Gus Lipkin: There’s also `->` which is sometimes useful in the terminal or after very long pipelines. But I like the lore about it that the people who made/used S back in the day, kept writing things out in the terminal and forgetting the `<-` at the beginning, so they made `->` so they wouldn’t have to arrow back to the beginning of the lines.
00:35:09 Gus Lipkin: `<<-` and `->>` I think they’re called super assignment
And `%<>%` exists too for piping stuff and assigning (`mtcars %<>% filter(cyl == 4)` would assign back to `mtcars`)
00:35:46 Priyanka: https://rdrr.io/github/jesse-smith/covidsms/man/tidyeval-walrus.html
00:35:56 Gus Lipkin: `dt[, new_var := 4]` or dt[, `:=`(one = 1, two = 2)]
00:38:41 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): Oh, on the S lore... the <- for assignment exists because the machines where S (or I think maybe a language before S) was developed had an arrow key that typed an arrow into your code.
00:41:12 Jon Harmon (jonthegeek): APL is the language that was written with an arrow key: https://www.r-bloggers.com/2018/09/why-do-we-use-arrow-as-an-assignment-operator/
00:43:44 Gus Lipkin: I really like the GitHub desktop app too
00:47:48 Gus Lipkin: About getting help online… “Cunningham's Law states "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer.””
